What to look for, and how to respond with care rather than alarm.
Change is a normal part of growing up, so no single sign proves drug use. But a cluster of changes — especially sudden ones — is worth paying attention to, with care rather than alarm.
Behaviour: withdrawing from family or old friends, new secrecy, a very different friend group, missing money or valuables, or losing interest in things they used to love.
School & routine: falling grades, skipped classes, changes in sleep or appetite, or unusual tiredness.
Mood & body: big mood swings, irritability, anxiety, red eyes, or needing more of something to feel the same.
If you notice several of these together, avoid accusations. Lead with concern — "I've noticed you seem different lately, and I care about you." Then reach out for guidance. Early, honest support changes outcomes.
